Environmental professional bodies

12 professional bodies are currently constituent bodies of SocEnv. There are at least another 12 environmental professional bodies and learned societies that should be considered for possible membership. Several of these may become further SocEnv constituent bodies.

Energy Institute represents professionals working in energy management and aims to promote the cost effective and environmentally responsible provision and management of energy in all its forms. EI, formerly The Institute of Energy, provides continuing professional development, training, training standards and guides.

Chartered Institute of Environmental Health represents professionals working in environmental health, especially in local authorities. CIEH provides training, including a Sustainable Development Awareness Programme, continuing professional development and careers advice.

Royal Town Planning Institute represents over 18,000 professionals working on town and country planning. RTPI membership requires an accredited planning qualification and some practical experience, and provides continued professional development as training, events, with webpages on careers advice, a planning portal and planning education, has a Sustainable Development Think Tank, and publishes a school manual Education for Sustainable Development.

Association of Environmentally Conscious Builders represents professionals and companies with the common aim of promoting sustainable buildings. AECB provides courses on sustainable education, campaigning events and offers advice and information on climate change.

Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors represents about 110,000 professionals working in land, property construction and environmental areas. RICS provides continuing professional development, postgraduate and professional courses, career advice with career profiles, advice relating to environmental issues and events. 

Royal Institute of British Architects represents over 30,000 professionals which provide specialists information and advice in promoting excellence in the profession. RIBA provides advice and guidance about becoming a professional architect, information on careers in architecture, as well as continuing professional development, an online events calendar providing details of forthcoming conferences and events.

British Association of Nature Conservationists represents professionals working on nature conservation. BANC publishes the journal ECOS.

Royal Society for Chemistry represents 45,000 professionals working in chemical science as well as training, education and science policy to promote chemical sciences. RSC provides web pages, called LearnNet, on education, professional development, career advice, courses, magazines and networking contacts.

British Geological Society represents over 9,000 professionals working and investigating the mineral structure of the earth. BGS provides a careers webpage with profiles and advice on finding a job and an area for applying for jobs , training courses, continuing professional development and professional qualifications.

Royal Geographical Society represents approximately 13300 professionals working and promoting Geography in areas such as research, education. RGS provides a dedicated page on education covering areas relating to continuing professional development, careers information and details covering further studies within the area of geography

Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply represents professionals working in purchasing and supply chains. CIPS improve professional standards, raises awareness and represents member’s interests.

Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport represents over 30,000 professionals working on the transport and movement of goods and services, in 28 national sections. CILT provides a downloadable PowerPoint presentation called Your Career Partner, has a new Education and Endowment Fund.

Institute of Leisure and Amenity Management represents professionals working as leisure managers and specialists in the leisure industry. ILAM provides a webpage on professional development, including career guidance, professional qualifications, jobs (only for subscribers to the Journal), and events diary.

Landscape Institute represents landscape architects in the UK and promotes the highest standards in the practice of landscape architecture and management. LI provides web sections on education and careers, news and jobs.

Chartered Management Institute represents over 71,000 professionals working as managers. CMI offers members a huge range of services from its website, including Chartered Manager status, continuing professional development programme, training, Career World website including job bank, virtual career centre, and networking.

Trade and employer bodies

Even if you are not a member of a professional body or learned society, you can still network with the members by attending its exhibitions, visits, seminars and other events.

There are a wide range of professional bodies and learned societies described on The Higher Education and Research Opportunities in the UK (HERO) website.

There are also a wide range of Trade Associations which, although very specific, can be a useful network for specific careers.
