Most job vacancies are filled well before a job description is posted. How do people know about these secret openings? networking! Networking isnt as mysterious as it seems. In fact, most of us already engage in personal networking all the time.
Networking at environmental events
Events such as conferences, exhibitions, visits, seminars can be useful for networking for environmental careers. Many are organised by professional bodies, learned societies or trade/employer bodies. Some are free, with online ticketing. These are perfect for career hunters, especially if you can share a lift to the event.
To get the best value from environmental events you may need to find ways of improving your confidence, by tackling your shyness or lack of work experience, and improving your communication skills, such as the subtle art of small talk.

Benefits
- Boosts confidence to speak with environmental professionals
- Builds confidence in semi-professional small talk
- Gives a quick insight into different jobs, organisations, employment sectors and their cultures
- Enables follow-up contact by letter, phone, email or even meeting
- Enables you to present your own business card or contact details
